Vilnius University Maintains Its Position in the Global QS Rankings by Subject

The latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020 published the results of Vilnius University (VU) study fields. VU is evaluated in three out of five subject areas and in 32 out of 48 subjects – two more than last year. 22 of them improved this year. Natural Sciences remain the strongest field at VU, and new fields of study are included in the ranking.

VU ranked among the top 500 universities in the world in three fields of study: Natural Sciences (401-450 place), Social Sciences and Management (401-450 place), Arts and Humanities (451-500 place).

In the subject area of Arts and Humanities, Linguistics continues to be ranked as the best subject (201-250 place). In the area of Natural Sciences, the subject of Physics and Astronomy was ranked in 251-300 place in the world, holding this position for the third year in a row.

The subject of Engineering-Chemical (ranked 351-400) and Mathematics (ranked 451-500) were included in the global QS ranking by subject for the first time.

In the area of Life Sciences and Medicine, the scores of Medicine improved and was ranked in 401-450 place (compared to 451- 500 in 2019). The subjects of Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Management also hold the position in 401-450 place.

The subjects of Biological Sciences and Business and Management were ranked in 451-500 place. Computer Science and Information Systems is ranked among the top 501-550 subjects in the world.

As always, the H-index, which measures the significance of scientific works, gives the highest rank to Physics and Astronomy (74.7 points out of 100), as well as Natural Sciences (73.9 points). The subjects of Accounting and Finance (69.2 points), Medicine (66.4 points) and Biological Sciences (67.2 points) are slightly behind.

A total of 1368 institutions worldwide were ranked, taking into account 48 subjects in 5 subject areas: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Management.

Universities are ranked according to the following criteria: academic staff evaluation, employer evaluation, number of citations in scientific publications, H index, which aims to measure the productivity of researchers and the impact of their work in the world.
